Career Navigator January 2026

Your Guide to Navigating Work, Confidence, and Career Success

Start the Year Strong

Interview Confidence Starts Here

January is all about fresh starts and if a new job is part of your 2026 goals, confidence is key. This month, we’re spotlighting insights from our Interview 101 webinar, led by Liz Hart, Executive Director of Tailored for Success, designed to help job seekers show up prepared, polished, and confident.

Whether you’re interviewing in person or on Zoom, first impressions matter and the good news is, preparation makes all the difference.

Interview 101: What Every Job Seeker Should Know

Man in interview

During the session, Liz shares practical, real-world advice to help candidates feel ready and confident before walking into an interview.

First impressions happen fast

  • Employers often form an opinion within seconds. Professional attire and body language play a major role in how you’re perceived.

Dress for the role and the culture

  • Business professional: Two-piece suits in neutral tones like navy or gray

  • Business casual: Polished looks for nonprofit, education, and media roles

  • Casual/tech environments: Clean, neat, and intentional still matters

Preparation builds confidence

Research the company, practice common interview questions, and prepare thoughtful questions that show interest and initiative.

Succeeding Video Interviews

Virtual Interview

Virtual interviews are here to stay, and during the webinar, Liz emphasizes that how you show up on screen matters just as much as in person.

Tips for strong virtual interviews:

  • Choose a quiet, distraction-free space

  • Dress professionally from the waist up (and beyond, mindset matters!)

  • Keep your background tidy and lighting clear

  • If space is limited, public library conference rooms are a great option

Navigating Tricky Questions

Liz also addresses how to handle personal or uncomfortable questions during interviews.

  • Redirect the conversation back to your skills and experience

  • Emphasize the value you bring to the role

  • Remember: persistent personal questions may be a red flag

She also highlighted how volunteer work can strengthen resumes and help explain employment gaps.
